Community Highlights: Meet Jay Work of Westside Woodwind Repair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Work

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I taught at Adam’s Music for several years and used my down time between students to tinker on instruments that needed some work. Eventually their repair man retired, and seeing opportunity, I bought whatever tools and supplies he was willing to sell. Over time I gained more tools and experience that enabled me to go independant. I no longer need to advertise as word of mouth has kept me as busy as I can handle.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The only struggle was balancing my repair career and my musical career. As the music career has slowed down, the repair career has taken off, taking care of that problem.

As you know, we’re big fans of Westside Woodwind Repair. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I repair all woodwinds, saxes, clarinets, flutes , oboes, and bassoon. I’m known for high level detail repairs, prompt service and reasonable price. I love what I do and put my heart in all my work.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Starting any career entails risk, especially being self- employed. Learning repair on the fly takes faith in your ability to solve problems and gain the essential motor skills necessary to the task. Well thought-out risk is worth taking if you want to live a fully expressed life.
